How to Calculate a Bowling Handicap
A handicap is a device that adjusts scores so bowlers of differing skill can compete fairly in the same match. A lower-average bowler is given extra pins to close the gap with a higher-average bowler. The most widely used formula is as follows.
| Step | Calculation | Example (base 220, average 178, 80%) |
|---|---|---|
| Difference | base score − average | 220 − 178 = 42 |
| Handicap | difference × percentage (rounded down) | 42 × 0.8 = 33.6 → 33 |
| Final score | game score + handicap | 170 + 33 = 203 |
The handicap percentage varies by league, with 80% and 100% being the most common. At 100%, the entire average difference is offset so everyone effectively starts from the base score; at 80%, the higher-average bowler keeps a slight edge. If your average is higher than the base score and the handicap would be negative, most leagues treat it as 0.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do you calculate a bowling handicap?
A bowling handicap is (base score − your average) × handicap percentage. For example, with a base of 220, an average of 178, and 80%, that is (220−178)×0.8=33.6, usually rounded down to a handicap of 33.
What is a typical handicap percentage?
It varies by league and group, but 80% to 100% is most common. The higher the percentage, the more handicap a lower-average bowler receives, which evens out skill differences more.
What if my average is higher than the base score?
If your average is higher than the base score, the result would be negative. Most leagues do not apply a negative handicap and treat it as 0. This calculator also shows 0 when the handicap would be negative.
How do you get the final handicapped score?
The final handicapped score is your actual game score (scratch) plus your handicap. For example, a scratch of 170 plus a handicap of 33 gives a final score of 203.
