Darts 501 & 301 Rules
X01 games (501, 301, and so on) are the most widely played darts format. Starting from a set score, you subtract your throws until the first player to reach exactly 0 wins. You throw three darts per turn and subtract their combined total from your remaining score.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Starting score | 501 (standard) or 301 |
| Throws per turn | 3 darts, maximum 180 points (triple 20 × 3) |
| Win condition | Reduce your remaining score to exactly 0 |
| Bust | Going below 0 voids the turn; revert to the pre-turn score |
| Double out | Finish on a double or bullseye to reach 0 (optional rule) |
On a dartboard, the base segment scores are 1-20 plus the bullseye (outer 25, inner 50). The outer thin ring doubles the score (double) and the inner thin ring triples it (triple). So the maximum for a single dart is triple 20, which is 60, and the maximum for three darts is 180 per turn. Under the double out rule, leaving exactly 1 is a bust because 1 cannot be finished on a double.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do you play darts 501?
Darts 501 starts at 501, and players subtract each turn's score, with the first to reach exactly 0 winning. You throw three darts per turn and subtract their total from your remaining score. The 301 game is the same except it starts at 301.
What is a bust in darts?
A bust is when your throw scores more than your remaining points, dropping below 0. On a bust, that turn's score does not count and you revert to the score you had at the start of the turn. This calculator detects busts automatically and does not subtract them.
What is double out in darts?
Double out is the official rule that your last dart must land in a double (the outer ring) or the bullseye to reach exactly 0. With double out enabled, any throw that would leave exactly 1 is a bust because 1 cannot be finished on a double.
What is the maximum score in one turn?
The maximum score in one turn (three darts) is 180. Hitting triple 20 (60 points) three times gives 60×3=180. That is why this calculator only accepts a score between 0 and 180 per turn.
